Your career guide during the internship
The internship year is the most important year for building your foundation as a radiologic technologist. These practical tips from the field help you get the most out of it.
Before you start
- Review the basics before day one: radiographic anatomy, the core positions for chest, limbs and spine, and the principles of radiation protection.
- Get organised: keep a small notebook or phone notes for every protocol and tip you hear. What you write yourself is what helps you most.
- Know your rotation schedule from the start and decide what you want to gain from each rotation.
Your first week
- Ask questions. Asking during the internship shows interest, not weakness.
- Watch before you do. In the first days of each rotation, focus on how the technologist handles the patient and the equipment, not just on pressing the button.
- Get to know the team: technologists, nurses and reception staff. Good relationships open more learning opportunities.
Getting the most from each rotation
- General radiography: this is where you build your foundation. Master positioning, exposure factors and image-quality assessment, and when you repeat an image, work out why.
- Emergency: learn speed with accuracy, handling injured and painful patients, and mobile radiography.
- CT: understand protocols, patient preparation, contrast media and their contraindications, and how to respond to reactions.
- MRI: safety first: screening before entry, the four zones and implanted devices. Then learn the core sequences and why each is chosen.
- Ultrasound: ask to hold the probe and practise under supervision. It is a hands-on skill.
- Nuclear medicine and interventional: focus on radiation protection, handling radioactive material and sterile technique.
Working with patients
- Introduce yourself and confirm the patient's identity with two identifiers before any exam.
- Explain what will happen in simple words. A reassured patient cooperates more, and the image is better.
- Respect privacy: cover the patient, close the door and never discuss patients in corridors.
- Ask about pregnancy for every woman of childbearing age before any exam involving radiation.
Radiation protection from day one
- Always wear your personal dosimeter in the correct position.
- Time, distance and shielding: minimise time near the source, keep your distance and use shielding.
- Collimate to the area of interest only, and never repeat an image without a reason.
- Never hold a patient during an exposure. If someone must, it should be a protected companion, not you.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Relying on your phone and social media during duty.
- Repeating images without understanding the error.
- Skipping safety steps, especially in MRI.
- Only watching and never asking to practise.
- Not recording the cases and experience you gain.
The internship and the licensing exam
- Start studying calmly from around the middle of the internship. One hour a day beats a week of cramming.
- Link study to the cases you see: when you image a case, review its topic the same day.
- Follow the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties announcements on exam dates and registration through Mumaris Plus, and check the current requirements on its official website.
Before the internship ends
- Ask for a reference letter from a supervisor or technologist you worked with closely.
- Update your CV with your rotations and the skills you gained.
- Think about where you felt most at home. It may be the start of your specialty. Try “Find your specialty”
