Your career guide after graduation
From your professional licence to your first job and beyond: steps and tips to start your career the right way.
Step one: your professional licence
- Registration and classification are done through Mumaris Plus of the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties.
- Prepare your documents early: degree, internship certificate, ID and any other requirements set by the Commission.
- The licensing exam: book your date and plan your study around the time you have.
- Procedures change from time to time, so the Commission's official website is always the reference.
Planning for the licensing exam
- Know the exam content outline and section weights, and split your time by weight.
- Start with a placement test to find your weak areas instead of studying everything equally.
- Understand, don't memorise. Questions come in different forms, and understanding the reason answers them all.
- Take timed mock exams at least two weeks before the exam to get used to the pressure and the clock.
- Review your mistakes more than what you already know.
Your first job
- CV: one or two pages at most, with your internship rotations, the skills and equipment you used, and courses such as BLS.
- Interview: expect questions on radiation protection, MRI safety, handling a difficult patient and a situation from your internship.
- Choosing where to work: early on, a department that teaches you matters more than a comfortable one. Look for variety of cases and a team that supports newcomers.
Your first year at work
- Be reliable: punctual, protocol-compliant and consistent in image quality.
- Ask for your department's written protocols and read them.
- Log your continuing education hours from the start; they are required to renew your classification.
- Don't judge the department too quickly. The first year is always the hardest.
Ways to grow
- Subspecialty: MRI, CT, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, interventional or mammography.
- The Saudi Board in radiology technology, and master's programmes.
- The Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) certificate from the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Commission, opening the way to radiation protection and quality roles.
- Quality and patient safety, training and education, management and research.
- International certifications, according to each body's requirements, useful if you plan to work or study abroad.
General tips
- Build a professional network: today's classmates are tomorrow's colleagues everywhere.
- Read a little every week. Imaging technology moves fast.
- Look after yourself: shifts and on-calls are tiring, and consistency matters more than short bursts of enthusiasm.
